50th Anniversary Newsletter #6: More on Events – Preliminary Calendar and First Event: Ski Weekend in Vermont
The framework of Events for MRFC50 was introduced in Newsletter #4. To summarize:
- The purpose of distributing our anniversary celebration across a full year of events is to provide as many opportunities for people to get together as we can. The celebration is in the enjoyment of each other’s company, whatever the setting.
- Anyone can suggest an Event. There are no rules, other than a requirement that each Event has a responsible Event Manager.
- An Event may have unlimited attendance, or may be limited to a particular number of registrants (a charter fishing trip, for example).
- The Schedule of Events will be well publicized, and online event registration will be available on the 50th Anniversary website.
A preliminary Calendar of Events follows. A few proposed Events currently lack an identified Event Manager, and we’d like to add a second EM to those events which have just one, so there are plenty of opportunities to lend a hand, or come up with an Event of your own! A couple of notes:
- Will the club host the Summer 7’s event next year? This is a playing side decision
- It has been suggested that we enter 4 sides at next year’s Can-Am tournament (men and women, active and veteran). We need to gauge support for this idea and get the appropriate sides registered for next year’s tournament ASAP.

Event Profile: Ski Weekend in VermontAside from the Annual General Meeting & Kickoff, the first MRFC50 Event of the year is a ski weekend in Vermont, organized by Old Boy Brian Cardew. We’re happy to advertise it here, to get into the swing of things. Brian’s event description and invitation follows:
Fellow Monmouth Ruggers
As a long-time member of Monmouth Rugby and the current President of the Monmouth Ski Club, I would like to invite you to join me at our lodge in Pittsford, Vermont for a weekend of skiing, boarding, sight-seeing and all-around fun.
This Event is scheduled for the first weekend of February – Thursday, Feb 2nd through Monday, Feb 6th. This trip can be as short as late Friday through Sunday or as long as late Thursday through Monday and I will discuss these options with whoever decides to go.
Our lodge is about 5 hours drive from the Red Bank area and is located approx. 25-30 minutes from Pico and Killington Ski Mountains near Rutland, Vt. Although it can sleep a maximum of 32 people, a group in the 15-24 range would be much more comfortable. And if only 3-4 of you want to go, we can do that as well. There will be two “couples” rooms available with everyone else staying in one of 4 bunkrooms. There are 4 full bathrooms.
If you or your significant other doesn’t ski or board, I have a list of many other activities that can be enjoyed around the area.
The Ski Club has a Chef – Mark – who will be available to cook some breakfasts and some dinners on the Saturday & Sunday while we are there. Interestingly, Mark used to bartend at various Lake Placid-Saranac Lake bars way back in the day so he will be more than ready for a rowdy Rugby crew.
We have a lot of room at our lodge and it is very inexpensive to stay there. Costs are as follows:
Lodge – $30 /night
Linens – $5 / weekend
Breakfasts – $9.50 each
Dinner – $ 19.50 each
Everyone will have to go online to buy their own ski tickets but I will provide details on this at a later time. If you would prefer not to go to Killington/Pico, Okemo is about 50 minutes, Mt. Snow / Stratton are 1:10, Mad River / Sugarbush are 1:30 and Stowe is 2:00 away so feel free to use whatever Ikon or Epic Ski Passes you might have.
Therefore, a 3-night/2 breakfast/1 dinner visit would be $133.50, while a 2-night/1 breakfast/1 dinner would be $94, plus lift tickets and miscellaneous.
We can work out details of days and meals once we know how many have interest.
I’m looking forward to having my fellow ruggers join me up in Vermont so start thinking about this and sign on to be a part of this trip.
To reserve a spot, please Venmo a $50 deposit to @MRFC50 (confirmation code 5044), or send a check to me at:
