The Village Lions rolled into town on Saturday for a friendly match with the Monmouth Renegades. While the Renegades dominated the loose play in the first half the Lions were able to score two break away tries. Monmouth was consistently taking ball in rucks and winning our scrums, however we gave away a few lineouts which was the difference in the first half as the Lions capitalized on the turnover ball. Halftime score Lions 12 – Monmouth 0. The second half started a little scrappy and Monmouth allowed two early scores which brought the Lions up to 24 -0 about 5 minutes into the second half. The Renegades then began to control the pace of the game and settled into a strong pattern of play which allowed scrumhalf Colleen Erickson to find the try zone as well as fly half Colleen Dwyer. Dwyer made 1/2 on conversions. The game was a shortened match (22 minute halves) and time ran out on Monmouth. Final score Lions 24 – Monmouth 12.
The second game of the day was against the other Renegades from Rochester, NY. The first half was very scrappy and Monmouth held a 5-0 lead when 2009 forwards MVP Liz Hussey crossed the line. Rochester kept it close in the first half by not allowing any more scoring by the home town Renegades. Halftime score Monmouth 5 – Rochester 0. The second half scoring started when Colleen Erickson put away MICHELLE “CHUNKSY” BOLTON FOR HER VERY FIRST TRY EVER. Fran Watson continued her strong 2010 peformance with another strong forward try soon after. Monmouth continue to dominate the second half as Lizzy Kelly scored the final two tries of the day from the wing (easier to puke when near the sideline). Dwyer was 3/4 in the second half conversions. Final Score Monmouth 31 – Rochester 0.
