Tim Welter

Tim started playing in 1976 and in the ensuing years played in the second most A side games in Monmouth’s history at 306. He also holds the record for most lifetime tries at 179. For eight years in a row 1976 to 1984, he scored double figure tries, topping off with 25 tries in 1977. Tim played on the Met Union All Star team from 1977-1981. He holds the Met Union record for longest try, picking the ball up at his own 5 and running it all the way back up the field. While the distance may have been met from then until now, the valor surely has not. He went on many of the club tours throughout his career, including 1977 New Orleans, 1979 England, Ireland, Isle of Man, 1981 Nova Scotia, and 1983 Hawaii. Even after A side retirement, he stayed very active in the club and continued to play for the Old Boys for most of the 90′s. In his official retirement game on May 10, 1997 Monmouth beat Japan 65-5 sending Tim out on top.
It is hard to tell what his favorite memory would have been, but for least favorite memory refer to Kevin Welter’s bio about the Hawaii tour in which Tim missed the consolation final to keep a promise to Anne. The team tricked him into thinking they lost because he was not there, when in fact they won.
It would be impossible to choose one memory from over twenty years in the club, a favorite from the dozens of people he met and whose life impacted his or just one of the hundreds of games he played in as the best. All of these collectively were what made Monmouth Rugby Club hold such a special place in his heart, and he never forgot any of them.
