Kevin Welter

Kevin Welter was recruited by Mike Fugee sometime in 1976when he saw Tim Welter kicking a football in Seven President’s Park. He convinced Tim to go to the Bay Ridge game that was coming up, and tim convinced Kevin to join him to watch. Though Tim showed his inexperience first by running straight out the back of the try zone, Kevin made his own “new guy!” fireworks by throwing a lead block into a would be defender. It didn’t take long before they both learned to play the game, well enough.
Kevin started playing in earnest in 1977 and for the next 4 years scored 100+ points per year finishing his career with 1,145 points. This was obviously back when people kept track of stuff like this. He scored 46 point in one game against Wisahickon. He had 4 tries and 15 conversions in the 106 – 0 victory.
Even with a forty-six point game under his belt, Kevin’s most memorable moment came when Monmouth was playing in our final pool game in the Hawaii Tournament. Monmouth has the chance to be the first mainland team to win a trophy at this tournament. Tim scored a try and Monmouth was within one point. Kevin rushed the kick and pulled it to the right. On the ensuing kickoff with seconds remaining the ball went to the pack. A minimum of ten players touched and passed the ball ending with a score in the left hand corner. The ref blew the whistle ending the game. Monmouth went on to play the Hawaii Harlequins in the final and did become the first American team to take home a Pan Am tournament win.
