The battle for the Division 1 crown will need to wait. Just ten minutes into Saturday’s match against Old Blue at Randall’s Island, the ref called the game because of an unexpected snowfall.  Nearly three inches of snow had settled on the turf field, and the game was deemed unplayable. Most other matches in the division followed suit, whether before or after.

Monmouth has offered to host a makeup game versus Old Blue on the 12th of November, but nothing has been set or scheduled. Details will follow.

The women lost to the Portland women’s rugby team on Saturday afternoon. Portland went on to win Sunday and will represent the NRU in the national playoffs next Spring. Congrats to the women on a great season and thanks to Brett Colhoun for stepping in to coach and instruct.

Monmouth RFC’s women are proud to host the Met Union Division 2 playoffs at Thompson Park this weekend. If the women are victorious, which we all hope they will be, they will make the national playoffs which is an expensive endeavor. The women are kindly asking for any donation to assist in travel and board expenses.

Please note that we are now using WePay as our payment processing vendor. As always, Monmouth Rugby Football Club is a 501(c)(3), non-profit conmpany, so all donations are tax-deductible. Any questions, please contact Colin.

Some things had been said, and just like anything that has been said, it cannot be unsaid. The press that a division 1 rugby club gets here, where hockey is the fourth most popular sport and most of the country cannot name more than 3 professional players, is minimal and rarely serves to do more than just recount what happened. But, the Monmouth team saw what was written, took it as what’s being said, and acted to discern it. The question was asked, of who had Monmouth beaten. Striking down Long Island was not enough, because maybe they were in an off-season, and the Village Lions were in their first season in the first division. Morris? Winless  and Monmouth had yet to prove anything.

Then, this past Saturday, New York Rugby Club came down to Thompson Park in order to decide who probably wins the first division of the Met Union this year. It may not have been domination but it was eighty minutes of ball control and finesse. Of hard tackles and crisp passes, firm lines an composure. Monmouth walked away with a 33-19 victory over New York. Monmouth walked away with a first place bye and home fields in their own control. But more than that they walked  away with what they walked in with – the knowledge that we are the team to beat in the Met Union this year. Compared with the rest of the games this fall, this game bears no real distinction. Monmouth did not back down inside, battling each and every scrum & lineout. We did not throw the punch where two years ago we might have and we did not blame each other every time our opponent struck. Monmouth stuck together at each drop of the ball and break down, and like the rest of this season, struck when the opportunity presented itself.

We travel to New York in two weeks, after next weeks bye, to play the Old Blue Super League side, in a match which counts against league standings, even if Old Blue cannot advance in the playoffs. Anything less than a bonus point win by New York next week secures home field and the bye for Monmouth. And if New York gets a BP next week, Monmouth will continue doing what they’ve done all year, which is handle only what we can, and do so with authority.

Both the men and women sides of the Monmouth Rugby Club have enjoyed healthy victories in their first two matches of the season.

On the 17th of September, the women took on their instate rival, the Morris Women Rugby club at Thompson Park. They were ble to jump out to an early lead, and though Morris kept pushing and fighting, the home Renegades were able to stave off a late burst of points and late-game ball control, walking away with a 26 o 10 victory.

Try scorers were Kate Kelly, Colleen Erickson and Jennifer Jones.

On the same day, the mens side took the field against their new division 1 rival, the Village Lions, who made it to the National D2 Final Four this year. Monmouth men had lost to the Lions in the spring Four Leaf’s tournament at Randall’s Island, but came out swinging and were able to throw three tries down within the first twenty minutes, while retaining possession of the ball for the better part of the first half. Some choppy play led to a bin and the allowance of two quick scores by the Lions, after Monmouth had put a few more tries down to seal the bonus point. Match ended with the Monmouth RFC 34 to 6 victors.

On the 24th of September, both Monmouth RFC sides needed to travel, with the women heading to Hudson Valley and the en heading to the Division 1 champs of 2010, Long Island RFC.

The women abounded on a huge 72 to 0 victory over the HV home club in what was not a hotly contested match. Both sides were valiant and nothing got out of hand, as the Renegades compliment the way Hudson Valley’s WRFC kept hitting and fighting to the end. 333682_10150294958860686_126681190685_8592601_1275398156_o

The men took on a much changed Long Island club which jumped out to a 12 to 10 halftime lead, abound to some bounces and aggressive play from the much bigger pack. Monouth RFC’s men were able to capitalize on some great speed around the backs and turned tight play calling into a wave of converted scores and a penalty. The match ended, Monmouth RFC the victor, 36 to 5, putting them in sole position of first place in the division after two weeks of bonus point victories.

Try scorers were Eric Daneman, Rob Morello, Kevin Kustelski, Michael Byrnes and Evan Fitzgerald.

Men play White Plains RFC at home this weekend and the women travel to Brooklyn.
